Story
Thank you for taking the time to read our story.
Zach was born in October 2010 with a condition called Exomphalos. Which is where the abdominal muscles do not close fully pregnancy. Zach wasn't reaching his milestones so we put it down to him having very poor core strength. In July 2012 we were given the devestating news that Zach had Quadraplegic Cerebral Palsy. We were told that he would never be able to sit, crawl, stand, walk or talk and his fine motor skills would be affected. Along with this condition Zach also only has one kidney as there was severe damage caused by reflux to the other one. He also has a 22q13.2 chromosome deletion, which geneticists are still investigating and developmental delay.
In the same year Zach had closure surgery on his stomach to put his organs back into his body.
Zach has lots of equipment that he uses in school and at home. Special seating system, K-Walker, Buddy Roamer, corner seat, standing frame and uses a wheelchair daily. He also has physio daily And uses a corner seat whilst wearing gaiters which help stretch his hamstrings.
The funds raised would pay for the Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy procedure along with intense aftercare. SDR is a procedure designed for Cerebral Palsy sufferers, a neurological disorder that affects the relationship between the brain and the nervous system. The exact cause of Cerebral Palsy is not known but it has been linked to bleeding on the brain and lack of oxygen reaching the brain.
SDR is a neurological procedure that reduces spasticity permanently and improves motor activity. During the operation each nerve route is divided into 3 to 5 nerve rootlets, the surgeon then stimulates each rootlet to identify the dorsal nerve rootlets that cause spasticity.
After the operation there is intensive physiotherapy which lasts for up to three years.
Previous funds raised have funded private physio sessions and equipment.
New monies raised will fund the operation & or therapy for Zach.

We have been fundraising for the last three years. In 2013 we took part in a 100 mile bike ride, raising £1500, 2014 a Toughmudder course, raising £1000 and 2015 was my biggest challenge, another Toughmudder, a triathlon with two family friends and a 10k run, raising £2500.
