Story

Investment in public education is very low in Nigeria and some individuals in academics in Nigeria are making efforts towards setting up teaching/basic research laboratory for students use. Among these people is Dr. Abdelghaffar A. Abdelmalik (Google scholar Profile) in the Department of Physics, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria who obtained a PhD from University of Leicester, UK and has taking up a challenge to setup a materials science laboratory in his home university where he can share his experience with students in the university. He want to initiate the process of developing top researchers/scientists in material physics from Africa.

He has made efforts to source for fund for the research/teaching facilities. He got a little research grant of 12,000 USD from the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Italy in 2013 which in 2014 he used to acquire few equipment that the students are presently using in the laboratory. He went ahead to personally raised about 3,200 USD in 2018 which he used to add some items in the laboratory for students’ use.

At the moments, He is hoping to buy the following items for the laboratory:

1. RK2674A AC/DC 0-50 kV Withstand Voltage Tester, 5 pieces of 222k 2200pF high voltage ceramic capacitor, 2 units of Acoustic emission preamplifier, to complete the high voltage test setup for learning

2. TH2828 Precision LCR Digital Bridge with frequency range up to 1MHz, Basic accuracy of 0.05%

3. Bench UV light accelerated ageing test chamber

4. DH-9140B Precision Blast Type Drying Oven

We have very bright students that are eager to learn but without access to teaching laboratories and not everyone will have the opportunity to travel abroad to study. We need to create that learning environment for our ambitious students. I am therefore helping Dr. A.A Abdelmalik, who was my Physics Teacher in Secondary School, raise fund to enable him purchase the laboratory items. The items purchased with the crowdfund will be tagged as charity donation to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria.
