    Story

On Saturday 25 November 2017 at 5.44am, we were blessed with the birth of our beautiful prince, Aahran Raja Patel. For 38 weeks everything was ‘normal’. All of Aahran’s scans were positive, check ins with our midwife were all fine, even the extra tests for certain genetic syndromes came back well within the parameters. It seemed like the only thing we needed to worry about was making sure the new house we had bought for our growing family was finished and ready to welcome our new addition home.

As I said, everything was normal, all until the moment Aahran arrived.

Malini required an emergency C-section as the doctor was slightly concerned when monitoring Aahran. It didn’t seem like there was anything major to be worried about. Everybody seemed calm enough and we even had time for a selfie before going into theatre.

Once we were in theatre and everyone explained what their role was, the doctor began the procedure. Our midwife kept looking over the sheet that separated our view from where the doctor was working to make sure we were ok. After a few minutes, we heard the doctor say ‘the baby is really small…’ We looked at each other a bit of surprised. After all of our scans and midwife appointments, we were expecting a baby heavier than our first. The doctor repeated himself again but this time, it was in a more alarming way.

Soon after we saw the doctor, midwife and a few other people (that had joined us in theatre more recently) take our son over to another table, crowding around him and looking very busy. After helping him to start breathing again we were given a quick glimpse of our calm, beautiful baby boy before he was rushed away to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

What was wrong with Aahran? The truth is, we don’t know.

After several tests and scans, we learnt about multiple abnormalities that Aahran was faced with. His brain hadn’t developed like it was expected to from very early in pregnancy and we were told he had also suffered a stroke like event that caused injury to the brain before birth. As a result, Aahran suffered seizures which got worse and more noticeable as time went on. His breathing was also shallow and would require support to help him breath easier.

A Geneticist examined him in his first few days, highlighting dysmorphic features however unable to identify a condition there and then, further tests had to be carried out. Aahran’s movements were very mellow - it wasn’t like you would normally see from a newborn. He moved his hands and feet, but with very little strength. There wasn’t even a newborn cry.

As parents, we craved to hold our baby. Feed him, bath him… all the things you are meant to do with your newborn baby. Instead, we spent much of his time here watching him through an incubator. It was his home, his bubble. With everything that was going on with him, we knew he was safe in there.

On Thursday 21 December whilst in our arms, Aahran left us to move on to a better place. He blessed our lives for 26 days and 25 minutes.

When we look back at Aahran’s life and the memories we were able to build in the short time we had together, there’s one group of people that made it all happen - the doctors, nurses and healthcare assistants in NICU at Kettering General Hospital.

From day one, NICU was Aahran’s home. We built a relationship with many of those that work there and learnt about what they do and how they take such great care of babies and their families. After Aahran was transferred back to Kettering from University Hospital Coventry following a few days for further tests, it felt like we’d come back to a ‘Welcome Home’ party. We both turned another year older in the 26 days Aahran was with us and even when we didn’t want to celebrate, the nurses found ways to make us smile with birthday cards from our son. They took care of our son in a way we couldn’t but they also took care of us too. We found a new family with the doctors, nurses and healthcare assistants from NICU and there isn’t a way for us to thank them enough for what they had done for Aahran and us. The only thing we can do is support them in their cause, and that’s where you come in!

In Aahran’s memory, we would like to raise as much as we can for NICU at Kettering General. All funds raised will go towards purchasing a brand new Giraffe incubator at a cost of £35,000. An incubator is home for so many poorly newborns and premature babies in their early lives. They are there to create a safe environment whilst they receive treatment and grow. Another incubator would allow the team in NICU to treat one more baby at a time, especially when things get busy (which can happen at any given minute).

However big or small, anything you can donate will help get that incubator. Just from Aahran’s celebration of life day, many of our family and friends have raised £717 so far. Dig deep and give generously so another baby can be supported and hopefully, go home with his or her parents -healthy and happy.

A heartfelt thank you to all of you for your generosity in helping us honour our beautiful Aahran’s memory. We have been told with the ‘record amount’ raised, they are now in a position not only to purchase the Giraffe incubator needed, but also where purchasing another is a realistic thought as opposed to just an idea. Go Team Aahran! At a time where we are still trying to figure out how life goes on, this restores our faith in humanity, love, kindness and the future. Thank you so much once again. All our love, Rahul, Malini & Saanvi x

A huge thank you to all of you for donating generously and helping us reach our target. We know the donations are still coming in and thank our friends and families for wanting to exceed our initial target. You've all been so kind and generous in wanting to help a poorly or premature baby at Kettering General Hospital in our beautiful Aahran's honour - thank you. We'll keep you posted with the final amount reached and the moment we are able to give the NICU at KGH the contribution for a new Giraffe incubator. Thank you once again.
