Story

In July 2020, I will be travelling to Sri Lanka to work with SLV Global, through which I will be taking part in a four week mental health placement. During this placement I will gain valuable experience in the field of mental health, particularly in clinical settings. I will be working on projects within psychiatric facilities to makeshift classrooms in temples, to promote positive mental health as much as possible, and reducing stigma around mental illness, through boosting confidence, self-esteem and improving key life skills in patients.

Why Sri Lanka? Sri Lanka, is an area where resources for those living with mental illness is scarce, due to minimal staff training and lack of resources and funding. The country is known to have one of the highest suicidal rates world wide, combined with a lack of information the Sri Lankan citizens have surrounding mental health. Therefore a further key aim of this project is to bring awareness to mental health disorder, whilst strengthening the resources that are already currently being used in Sri Lanka to treat metal illness.

I have started a donation page to be able to cover the cost of my placement, with the money donated going directly towards the placement fee, which includes training with professionals, weekly workshops, and also accommodation, where I will be living with a local Sri Lankan family in a homestay.

It would be amazing if anyone can donate, any support would be greatly appreciated! If you want to find out more information about the project you can go to the following link: https://slv.global/placements-abroad/sri-lanka-mental-health-placement
