Story

My Daughter Abbey was born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) this affects all four of her limbs. She has always been determined in life, all throughout her younger years she endured many operations to help her walk but unfortunately these were unsuccessful, however they did improve her flexibility and movements in her joints.

She went on to use her wheelchair permanently and continued studying at school where she found her love of Art. Abbey then left school and studied 8 years extra curriculum at college and university.

Present day Abbey now has two severe conditions which she is often hospitalized with for long periods of time. when she gets unwell she becomes bed bound and in severe pain, this pain can quickly become unbearable for her and she has been rushed to hospital 5 times in the last 8 years with Sepsis, this is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body's response to infection causes injury to its own tissues and organs and if this is not caught early enough can lead to death.

Having these two conditions and trying to lead a normal 27-year olds life is very hard for Abbey, she is in chronic pain each day due to the two conditions she has and when she is painting this helps distract her from the pain. In the last two years Abbey has suffered anxiety and depression causing her to isolate herself but when she is creating Art she speaks with people about what she is painting, she gets out and about with her carers and takes photographs, so she can then go on to use them as inspiration.

Abbey lives in a small bungalow and has a lot of medical equipment leaving her short of space to complete her paintings and therefore she resorts to the garden table to complete her Art work, but this becomes tiresome very quickly because she doesn’t have the correct height table for her wheelchair, so she must bend over, leaving her with back ache.

I would love to see my daughter shine in an Art studio with all her paintings around her and the correct height table because I know she can do so much more than she is now. Abbey needs to leave her comfort zone and keep growing because she has a talent only others could dream of.

I am trying to raise enough money to get Abbey her dream studio in the garden and get people in to build this for her therefore I am asking help from anyone no matter how small as everything will help.

Abbey has plans to do an exhibition of her Art and would like to donate a painting to the Peterborough Cancer Ward to make people smile.

As Abbey Phipps’ family we thank everyone for the tremendous support you have shown abbey since she appeared on BBC1 Look East news.
