Story

The Abbey Hall is a community hall that was built in memory of servicemen from Plymouth who lost their lives in the first world war. The hall is Grade II listed and is almost 100 years old and is adjacent to one of the oldest houses in Plymouth "The Prysten House" which was built in 1495 and is a Grade I listed building. The money was raised to build the hall from fundraising throughout the city following WWI and it was completed in 1923. The hall is used by many community groups who offer a lifeline to all ages from older people, young parents and families. The income from the groups is ploughed into the running of the building. Unfortunately, the boiler that was installed many years ago is on its last legs and is in need of replacing with a modern energy efficient boiler. This will help the environment and save on costs.

The picture shows the "Door of Unity" which holds a very special place as it commemorates the close friendship between the people of Plymouth and America. In 1813 two American sailors were brought ashore after being wounded in a battle in the English Sound and even though the two countries were at war the People of the city tried to help them. Every year we remember this special friendship with a service attended by representatives from the American Consulate and our own military and civic leaders
