    Story

In 2015 I volunteered on a UK gov project in Zimbabwe, I was placed in the village Dombodema and was lucky enough to live for 3 months with a family, who looked after me as their own.

I returned in 2016 for a visit and could not ignore the struggles many people still face today. One being access to water. The Plumtree district in Zimbabwe is suffering from one of its worst droughts in decades. The drought has led to huge crop failures and animal deaths, leading to many rural and previously self sustaining families depending on food aid.

Dombodema faces a huge lack of water facilities, with 150 households in the village, zero have running water and therefore rely on rain water. But with a drought that is a problem. The community shares a borehole (deep hole drilled into the ground to extract water through a pipe and pump). With droughts continuing, more people rely on this source. Some locals not only have to walk long distances to reach the borehole but queues occur from as early as 5am daily.

Access to clean water isn't just a matter of thirst and hunger, sanitation and hygiene but a matter of opportunity for livelihoods through agriculture, an opportunity for more sustainable nutrition through growing crops and an opportunity for better education through more time for studies currently wasted queuing water for not just my host family but the community.

So let’s drill a borehole! Along with the people living in Dombodema, we have identified a space for the borehole, gained local council approval, got quotes for installation and formed a committee to cover maintenance.

I am committed to making this a reality, and just need your help to raise the funds! (the community has also saved 5% of the costs as a practice of empowerment and ownership). All £2500 will go DIRECTLY to paying for the borehole, and I will be going to Zimbabwe in May to see the process through.

Thanks guys, anything you feel you can give will make a huge difference
