Virgin Kids Academy is a low cost boarding school home to over 300 students in Kasoa, Greater Accra, Ghana. About 50 children live at the school, the boarders are either orphaned, street children or have come from low income families.

Last year I volunteered at the school for 2 weeks and was confronted with their reality. Boarders at the school sleep, eat and bath together so outbreaks of sickness are common. It is also very easy for children to contract malaria which can go undiagnosed for long periods of time. Whilst I was there, often children would sleep in their uniforms and many would wear the same clothes daily. A lot of them had one pair of shoes which in some cases were battered or had holes in. There are only a couple of rooms used for sleeping with over 15 kids in each room. Bed frames were damaged and foam mattresses were extremely thin. Younger children slept on floor mats & it was 2-3 kids per foam mattress. During my stay water was limited and children were given 3 basic meals a day. Although resources are limited the headmistress, teachers and staff at the school do such a good job with what they have. The kids are so full of joy, intelligent, caring, hardworking and respectful. Not only do they get the gift of education, this fun loving school full of their friends and now family is their home.

The Headmistress expressed her plans of expanding the school to create more space and resources for the boarders as well as taking in more children at the school. Construction of the extension has already begun however they need support. I am raising money to help support the ongoing construction of the school, also so they can buy necessities such as underwear, shoes, uniforms, mattresses, school and medical supplies for the children.

By donating you are giving more children the opportunity at an education thus helping break the cycle of poverty.
