    Story

    My Story

For those who don’t already know me, my name is Abigail Holding and I am 21 years old. I am currently a second year student nurse, studying Adult Nursing at Edge Hill University. As part of my degree, I have been given the amazing opportunity of completing one of my nursing placements abroad. I have chosen to embark on a 4 week placement with ‘Plan My Gap Year’ to Faridabad, India (approximately 17 miles from New Delhi). I will be undertaking this placement as part of Plan My Gap Year’s medical programme, commencing 6th January 2019.

    Why did I choose India?

Many people have asked me ‘Why India?’ Personally, my intentions for this placement are to help as many people as I possibly can whilst learning and gaining new experiences. To do this effectively, I believed that I would need to travel to a developing country where there is suffering, poverty and disease. I believed that it would be here that my actions, however small, would have the biggest impact. After much research, I decided to follow my heart and chose to take part in a nursing placement In India.

Not only is India a beautiful country, it is a country in need. India’s healthcare system has come a long way, despite this the majority of the Indian population still experiences poor health. This is due to a lack of awareness of health problems and many Indians can’t afford medical treatment. Plan My Gap Year Medical programmes such as the one I am taking part in, reach out to those who can’t afford medical attention and offer free or highly subsidised healthcare to those who live in slum and rural communities.

My aim is simple, to make a positive difference to individuals and to help and support the Indian healthcare system in delivering safe and effective care to the local community. And also provide patients with a better quality of life. This placement will not only remind me how lucky we are to have the NHS, but will enlighten me into how other countries healthcare systems work and educate me into conditions and diseases that we don’t have in the UK. I will also take the opportunity to enhance my knowledge during this placement, and utilise my existing skills and experience to make a difference to the Indian communities and individuals that I will be working with.

Being part of the NHS is a wonderful thing. However completing this placement and knowing I have made a great difference in a country that is deprived, and that have potentially changed an individual’s life for the better will give me an immense feeling of pride and fulfilment. I believe that being part of this experience will make me a better nurse in the future.

    Itinerary

During my Nursing placement in India I will be taking part in delivering healthcare in various settings such as: slum medical camps, Indian hospitals, local GP clinics, School slum clinics and Slum outreach health campaigns.

Me and the 6 students I am taking part in this placement with, also plan to visit multiple children’s orphanages. We are arranging to take a suitcase full of toys, clothes and other necessities such as bandages, sanitary and hygiene products and contraceptive supplies that we can give out to orphanages and clinics in the community.

During this placement I will be gaining valuable experience from various healthcare settings, such as: A&E, Anaesthetics, Dentistry, General Surgery, Maternity and Midwifery, Nursing, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Occupational Therapy, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Pathology, Physiotherapy and Ultrasound.

What will your donation go towards?

Your donation will help with the cost of my trip only, broken down as the following:

    • 4 weeks of: Accommodation, Meals, Transport to and from placement areas via Tuk Tuk and Airport transfers- All provided by Plan My Gap Year for a total cost of- £644

    • Flights - Approximately £450 return

    • Vaccinations needed before the trip- Approximately £300

    Further Funding

As I am receiving NO funding from University for this placement, I am relying on my own hard work and determination and also the generosity of friends, family and the wider public, to help gather enough money to be able to be a part of this once in a lifetime opportunity. I have set a goal of £1500, this is only half of the total cost of the trip. If I could reach or exceed this target, not only would I be completely overwhelmed, it would also help me massively and allow me to achieve my dreams and be part of this once in a lifetime experience.

Being a part of this experience means a great deal to me. I believe that having this experience will make me a better nurse in the future, working for our NHS. Donations will be greatly appreciated, no matter how big or small.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story, I look forward to bringing you along on the journey with me.
