Story
Hello all,
Welcome to our charity fundraiser page which will explain more about our aims and what we will be participating in over May 2024.
For those who don’t know me, my name is Abi Robinson and I am a second year nursing student at University of Manchester.
In May 2021 I was sexually assaulted in Nottingham City Centre on the final day of my first year. I was put in a position where a man had uninvitedly came over and put me in an uncomfortable situation where I could not get away.
Very sadly Nottingham soon became a place of trauma and I was unable to continue my studies.
This year will mark 3 years since my assault. Each year I set myself a challenge to try and turn what can be a hard time into something positive that support those who have been a victim of sexual violence and their mental health.
My mission since I took on the three Yorkshire peaks back in 2022 has been to support local and national charities which support myself along with many others in recovery after experiencing a traumatic event. I can’t change what happened to me but I can try and make a difference and share my experience to show people that they aren’t ever alone and with the correct support they can also fall back in love with their life.
I hope you decide to follow us along on this journey and join us in raising money for GMRC and Samaritans this year. Any donations are appreciated ! Please share our just giving page and follow our instagram page @learningto_survive
Learning to Survive Events :
1). In partnership with the University of Manchester hockey club the womens and mens club with be running 10km on 8th may. Despite us all being able to play hockey, many of us are not runners off the pitch. This will be an exciting challenge for us all and a way for us to join together and support two charities !
2). I will be running manchester half marathon on the 26th may. This will be my second time running a half marathon. Manchester is my safe place and where i got to start again. Running around my favourite city that i can confidently call my home is something i am proud of.
I am doing these events for myself as much as I am doing it for those who feel alone and don’t have the power to use their voice. This is for everyone who has lost someone to suicide, experienced suicidal thoughts or have been a victim of some form of sexual violence.
For all genders, races, ethnicities and religions. Mental health and Sexual assault do not target a singular population but everyone. I know raising money will not change our world, but it is a small step in the right direction.
