I am a second year adult nursing student, studying at Canterbury Christ Church University. I absolutely love my course, and I have now been blessed with the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and explore the health care system in another country.

Currently I am planning for an elective placement in January 2020, in Nepal Kathmandu. Nepal, is known as the land of the Himalayas and is a popular destination to travel to. However, the healthcare system is poor and staff are trying their best in the circumstances. There is a lack of equipment, access to medication and patients have to pay for their treatment.

The duration of this placement is 4 weeks and is provided by Work The World. I will be provided with the opportunity to gain experience of working in hospitals not as privileged as hospitals in the UK. This I feel will have a positive impact on my future nursing career, I want to learn how to be more resourceful, appreciative of equipment/ resources and to not take this for granted. I will be at greater risk in Nepal due to recurring epidemics and poor hygiene. Therefore, I feel this will make me appreciate my position when returning to work in the UK, as I am lucky to not be in the position of many health care professionals working in Nepal.

I want to go out to Nepal, with an open mind, ready to be hands on and at times feel out of my comfort zone. This is going to be a challenging trip but one I feel could improve the care I deliver to future patients, which is my main priority and maybe like other students I could make a difference.

So the fundraising starts here, I will be running a race on the 9th June in Staplehurst and I plan to climb the 3 peaks in a weekend to raise a bit more.
