We are the Abingdon Mummers, keepers of a centuries-old tradition of Christmas folk theatre. Our play, handed down, half-remembered, and gloriously incomprehensible, is a battle of light and darkness, death and resurrection. Expect Father Christmas, sword fights, a bumptious King George, a magical doctor, a phoenix-like Mrs Finney, and a rousing verse of We Wish You a Merry Christmas before we vanish into the night.
Our performances last 15 minutes. The memories (and confusion) last much longer.
This year, we're raising money for a cause close to our hearts: St Ethelwold’s House: a beloved sanctuary in Abingdon that offers peace, community, and connection. A hidden gem with a stunning volunteer-tended garden, it's a refuge in an ever-hectic world.
But it's under threat. Emergency repairs to this ancient building revealed far more damage than expected – leaving the charity with a sudden £70,000 shortfall.
St Ethelwold’s gives so much to Abingdon. Now it’s our turn to give something back.
