A CHANCE FOUNDATION.
PROJECT TITLE: “OUR DUTY”
A Chance is a registered Nonprofit making organization founded on the 01/01/2018 With a MISSION “ to be an advocacy platform on teenage pregnancy and early child marriage and promote the right to freely express an opinion in all matters affecting children and to have that opinion taken into account
While on holiday in The Gambia,2017 the founder approached a girl for a 3 day life exchange and lived the young girls life for few days but found out later, the girl is to be married off by her parents. It was unbelievable, but after a closed door discussion with the vulnerable girl, the founder picked the element of truth; hence, intervened to safe the young girl from the early marriage.
Sending young girls for early marriage has become a culture in the Gambia society as ways to minimize teenage pregnancy and behavioral difficulties arising out of economic hardship, migration and separation from family members and friends, exploitation, and exposure to violence”.
Based on the above reasons and couple with published articles on teenage pregnancy (WHO on adolescent pregnancy; updated September 2014), and early marriage (UNICEF “multiple cluster survey 2010-The Gambia), the founder deem it necessary to form a foundation where volunteers can use the platform to advocate to end early child marriage and minimize the rate of teenage pregnancy through awareness raising

achancegambia.com “OUR DUTY” project is foreseen as a model/prototype intervention based on the problem driven iterative adaptation approach (PDIA). Achance will engage with local agents in identifying their problems, design and implement with them solutions, evaluate what works and what doesn’t, keep what worked, and repeat the process. Trying and testing the ideas out in the field, facilitating learning from this experience to continue tailor the activities to the real needs of the beneficiaries.
The project intervention will target the schools and communities located in the Western Division and the greater Banjul of the Gambia in the first year. The project will embark on school and community outreach with the aim of raising awareness on teenage pregnancy and the negative effects of early marriage in order to promote the holistic wellbeing of the children in the school. This intervention will consequently benefit the teachers, the students, and the all country at large.
