Story

The Autism Spectrum affects a huge number of people: children who are not given the support they need, labelled as 'naughty' or 'rude' and not given the opportunities they need to develop and achieve their full potential; parents who face a constant uphill struggle to get their children the help they deserve and adults, who due to the barriers imposed by the 'adult world,' face daily hardships to fit in and access society.

This project aims to support these people providing training to schools, universities and employers to help them to understand the barriers faced by individuals on the spectrum. In addition to providing individualised support to parents and children on the spectrum helping them to access services and support.

We must remember parents often wait months if not years to get their children diagnosed and even when they are diagnosed, they do not get the support they need due to government funding issues. These parents need somewhere where they can access advice and support through this time. We aim to provide this.

Young adults on the spectrum often find it challenging to gain and indeed keep employment, not because they are not good at the job, but because their behaviour is misinterpreted and employers do not understand them and do not cater for their needs. Employers need training to help them to understand the many benefits of employing people on the Autism Spectrum whilst also understanding how to support them. We aim to provide this and thanks to the donations already received, we have already delivered a number of successful programmes.

Additionally, there have been many occasions where children have been excluded from school due to misinterpretations of their behaviour and a lack of the support to help them to access education. Similarly, young adults on the spectrum have been arrested and criminalized because their behaviour has been misinterpreted and police lack training or empathy to manage the situations appropriately. These organisations need training and awareness to help them to understand that reasons behind these behaviours are often nor criminal at all; they are merely misunderstood. We aim to provide this training.

Any donation, however small, will help to get this project off the ground and will help us to educate key professionals in making the adult world- which can often be a challenging place for young adults on the spectrum- a safer and more understanding place.
