Story
I have been offered a place to do a research PhD on Mental Health Disability in Actors, focussing on best practice through, the Manchester School Of Theatre at Manchester Metropolitan University (member of the Federation of Drama Schools)
The place is there, the team is in place but the funding is proving a problem.
At present there is very little research on any kind of mental health issues in actors and nothing on mental health disability. For an industry that trades in emotion this is a major oversight.
I believe that improving best practice around mental health disability would positively impact on wider mental health issues as well.
The research would take 3 years (full-time) and would aim to produce workable best practice guidelines based on evidence rather than anecdotes.
I have received various kinds of support from organisations including:
Equity UK
The Federation of International Actors
The Arts Council
As well as a wide range of theatre companies and individual practitioners.
Funding will go towards:
Running workshops
Running other events
Paying practitioners
Paying research salary (in line with university stipends)
Promotional material
Sourcing resources
(Please note this is not an exhaustive list, but all funds will go into the research or related work.)
