Story
Teams of dedicated volunteers across Plymouth are helping men to access mental health support in their local area. These amazing individuals work with local charities and peer-support networks toward a common goal: to provide a safe space for men to share their experience of mental illness and access the help they need.
Everyone will experience emotional distress at some point in their lives. For around 1 in 4 people, this distress will contribute to mental health difficulties that may require additional support. It remains the case that men are more likely than women to take their own lives, and in many cases these preventable deaths are associated with underlying mental health conditions. Unfortunately, stigma surrounding mental illness can make people reluctant to seek help, and practical barriers can also make it difficult for some groups to access NHS or private mental health services. This is where local volunteer groups are making a positive difference.
As part of Mental Health Awareness week, I will be walking 15 miles on Thurs 21st May, starting from Plymouth City centre and finishing at my place of work - Dartmoor Prison - where I will join my colleagues in providing mental health services for the male population.
The money received from this event will be donated to volunteer groups who are supporting men in the local are in their recovery. If you are able to make a contribution, whether this is a donation or finding your own way to raise awareness of mental health, you will be helping make a positive difference to the wellbeing of our communities.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

4 years agoHi again everyone Thank you to all those who showed support for mental health awareness week by helping raise an amazing amount of money. The plan is to use the funds to promote the fantastic work of Andy’s Man Club. This growing network run local peer-support groups across the UK, allowing men to come together and talk about their experiences of mental illness. Your kindness will make a positive difference to what I think we can all agree is a worthy cause. Thank you again for your support. Stay safe. Adam

4 years agoHi everyone Late update. I am pleased to say that after 7 hours, a few blisters, and the odd encounter with Dartmoor’s wild ponies, I completed the 15 mile commute to work, albeit getting in slightly later than planned. On my way I came across several homemade signs giving thanks to NHS and key workers (below), which really spurred me on in the early hours of the morning. I can honestly say I really enjoyed the experience, though I now intend to show myself kindness by staying off my feet whenever possible. Update on donations to follow Adam
