EDIT: WE REACHED THE TARGET! £750 was raised to cover the initial goal of covering the cost of the hire car to get me to the camps. Now, it's all about getting the clothes and other essentials needed to keep people warm, dry and dignified as Winter approaches.
An emergency has been declared on the Greek island of Lesvos. Camps are overcapacity by many 1000s. Illness abounds, children have attempted suicide and people are dying. Conditions are inhumane and Winter is on its way.
NGOs and dedicated volunteers are doing amazing work, but much more support is needed to cope with the unprecedented numbers. As well as the basics - food, shelter, clothes - social support is needed. I'll be working with a team dedicated to empowering camp residents to solve their own problems, develop skills they want to improve and much more. Many of their volunteers are actually residents of the camp.
For me to be able to get to the camps and transport resources and other volunteers, I'll need a hire car. I've now been quoted €650 to hire a car for 6 weeks. Adding petrol costs to that gives us the present target.
As well as funds for this, we need to raise awareness. It's not in the news, but it needs to be. Please talk to people about it and share my updates at www.facebook.com/adamleighbates .
Thank you.
