Story
Thank you for visiting my justgiving page.
The Federal Republic of Nigeria is a country in the west of Africa bordering Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon to the east & Niger in the north. It's southern borders lie on the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. It comprises of 36 states and has it's capital in the federal capital territory (Abuja). With an estimated population of 190 million people in 2017 and a forecasted annual increment of about 4 %, Nigeria was once known and is often called the “giant of Africa" – yet in recent times the economy has taken a downward spiral and continually fallen short in its delivery of a healthcare system that is sustainable and affordable for the average citizen in spite of previous years of a buoyant economic growth.
Nigeria in recent years has been known for its high financial scamming rate also known as 419 and in more recent times the rise of militant group in the north called Boko Haram – the group responsible for the abduction of 200 school Girls which raised the #BringBackOurGirls (@BBOG_Nigeria). These recent times have only made the healthcare in the country even direr than ever before.
Oyo State (where the team is visiting) is in the south-western part of Nigeria and it's capital is Ibadan. It hosts the oldest University and Medical school in Nigeria with notable alumni like Nobel prize winner Wole Soyinka; Chinua Achebe; Bimbo Odukoya; William Kumuyi to mention a few. Yet in-spite of this well-respected institution – people living in surrounding villages find themselves unable to afford healthcare.
To this end, the health care ministry of Jesus House Church has teamed up with the Oyo state ministry of health and a local charity (ABC Medical Foundation) to deliver a 5-day medical outreach camp in and around the local remote villages near Ibadan – capital of Oyo state. There is a recognised deprivation in the area which in turn has led to higher than normal ailments like Obesity; Malnutrition; Helminthiasis HIV/AID; Diabetes among a list of other ailments. This collaboration is bringing together a medical team of over 98 professional including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, optometrists, gynecologists, lab technicians etc
The motivation to go and serve as a helper within the healthcare team is driven primarily by being a follower of Jesus, who through His life expressed love practically to the less privileged, and secondly being an African, I am aware of the low and minimal level access to health care options (in comparison to our awesome NHS, and private care) in Nigeria . As the trip is a sponsored one, I would love for you to be part of it by helping me raise £700 towards specialist medical treatment for some of the people I will meet. My accommodation and logistical expense is being met by our partners in Nigeria. No amount is too small, as according to Tesco "every little helps" :-). Thanks for taking the time to read this story, God bless you as you help me help my less priviledged brothers and sisters.
