Weʼve raised £385 to Build 200 new homes for Britain's birdlife
- Funded on Tuesday, 31st May 2022
Don't have time to donate right now?
I've dedicated the best part of the past two years to raising awareness of, and practically conserving the UK's House Sparrows. A beloved garden bird woven into British culture, they seem common, but ornithological surveys show we've lost over 21.7million of them since 1966. That's nearly 1 per minute.
According to the BTO, one of the best ways to conserve House Sparrows is to provision them with nestboxes (also helping other hole-nesting species nearby). I built and installed my first birdbox in 2020, and in 2021 hand made and installed over 200, on everywhere from schools and churches to dentists and nature reserves, all made from upcycled wood, taken from landfill and fly tipping sites.
This will be the last year of my project (savethehousesparrow) as I'm leaving for Uni later this year. So, I've set myself the target of building and installing a final 200 birdboxes before July (giving me a few weeks to get organized before Uni).
This also means I'm trying to save as much of my money for Uni as possible, so please consider donating something to fund materials for the birdboxes (screws, tacks, roofing felt and wood if there're shortages). As a guide, one birdbox made from recycled materials costs £2.50, one from bought wood will cost about £7 (although I'll be making less of these).
Thank-you so much if you're donating something - you can visit the website, Twitter or Instagram for updates on how many birdboxes have been made, where they've been installed etc. :)

So sad to see these charming little birds disappearing when I remember them being so common when I was young.

Harry,I remember a childhood in Sussex when house sparrows were part of everyday life. The cheeping used to drive my mum mad! Now you hardly hear them. Thank you for what you're doing.
