Story

We raising money to establish a mental health unit for Caribbean and African individuals experiencing mental health issues, which is a largely underfunded sector.

Statistics show that there are a disproportionate number of Caribbean and African (CAA) individuals with mental health problems in the UK.

Risk of psychosis in Black Caribbean groups is estimated to be nearly 7 times higher than in the white population. Such over-representation has been the case for more than 40 years in the UK.

Detention rates under the Mental Health Act during 2017/18 were also 4 times higher for people in the ‘Black’ or ‘Black British’ group than those in the ‘White’ group.

There is a huge deficit in culturally appropriate services and interventions in our current mental health system.
