    Story

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a procedure where the female genitals are deliberately cut, injured or changed, but where there's no medical reason for this to be done. It's also known as "female circumcision" or "cutting." It is illegal in Kenya but among Maasai communities it s still prevalent. Maasai girls are traditionally considered children until they are circumcised, it is seen as imperative for a Maasai girl to undergo the circumcision rite before she is married. This strongly ingrained cultural belief propels families to go to great lengths to complete the circumcision. It's very painful and can seriously harm the health of women and girls. It can also cause long-term problems with sex, childbirth and mental health.Legal enforcement and arrests in Kenya has driven the practice underground and been ineffective in stopping FGM.

MaaChild is a charity dedicated to providing secondary education Maasai children. Education is pivotal in changing this dangerous and unnecessary practice. In association with the charity and the University of Central Lancashire I will be travelling to Kenya to work among the Maasai people. Money raised will help fund this trip, provide education for a child and help provide essential tools for education.
