At the moment, the London Borough of Southwark does not have a specialist bereavement counselling service so Grief Matters Southwark's project will make a real difference to the community in Southwark. The project will aim specifically to help those experiencing "complex bereavement", eg bereavement arising out of crime or suicide.

Until March 2019, I volunteered as a BACP-registered counsellor for a specialist bereavement counselling service in Southwark. The service closed in June as the charity which had been funding it could no longer afford to do so, having lost local authority funding for the service a couple of years earlier. GMS has been set up by BACP-registered former staff and volunteers of the service where I volunteered to launch a new, specialist bereavement counselling service for the people of Southwark.
