Story
Raise funding to Build a Memorial incorporating Historic stones and Brass Plaque's from the original building in Memory of Richard Walker Landowner who bequeathed land and property to fund a charitable Free School for the teachings of the 3 "Rs" to the poor families of Thornhill known as Walker Free School. it stood on the site for 200 years before it was demolished and the land now remains bare. We want to build this Memorial to return what is left of the school which will include a Time Capsule of Stories of times gone by and other items photographs newspaper cuttings etc within the build, to stand on the original site for another 200 years keeping our local History alive. If you ask any resident of Thornhill "it's near Walker Welfare" even though the building has gone everyone know's where the Walker Welfare is and was the heart of Thornhill. It was not only a school but home to pre-school children and play groups, Polling Station during elections, meeting place for the Senior Citizens group and used for many years until the local authority deemed it unsafe and decided to demolish this Historic building. A small group have got together and obtained a small part of this land from the local council and granted us permission to build this Memorial and we have worked hard since 2014-15 and now our work begins to hopefully fund raise enough money in which to build this Memorial in Rememberance of a man who brought Free Education to the poor of Thornhill and a Building which was used by many for over 200 years.
