    Story

Alan Lee was a prolific British sports writer and author who died unexpectedly in December 2015.

He was the cricket correspondent at The Times from 1988 to 1999, and from 1999, the horse-racing correspondent. He authored many books on cricket, including biographies, co-written with the subjects, of David Lloyd, David Gower and Tony Greig. In the field of racing, he wrote a 2002 biography of the jockey Richard Johnson.

In 2001, Lee won the SJA Sports Writer of the Year and the Racing Journalist of the Year awards. He was named the Racing Journalist of the Year again in 2003.

He was fortunate to be able to do a job that he loved and had a very clear passion for sport – not just cricket and racing which he worked in, but his love of Arsenal and many other sports too. He had an eye for identifying sporting talent and enjoyed watching young sportspeople develop. Having worked in sport for over 40 years, he understood what was required and the sacrifices that people make to rise to the top in their sport.

The Alan Lee Foundation will support young men and women to achieve their sporting ambitions. The charity will be setup with the intention of making grants available for individuals to apply for in order to help them develop within their sport.

The purpose of this project is to raise sufficient funds to register the Foundation as a charity. Any excess funds raise will go towards the first round of grants which will will be advertised for application upon the launch of the charity.
