Weʼre raising £5,000 to help a village school in Madagascar and provide a college bursary in the UK, in memory of Alana Cutland.

Don't have time to donate right now?

Story

We have so far supported two specific causes in memory of our beloved Alana, who died on 25th July 2019 as a result of the anti-malaria drug Doxycycline that she was taking.

Firstly, in Madagascar we have directly helped the villagers of Amboaboaka and the surrounding area. This is an extremely poor region, and for the villagers to leave their farms and spend 10 days searching for Alana was extraordinarily generous. We have funded the rebuilding of a dilapidated local school, which means that none of the children will need to have lessons outdoors as was previously the case. We are now exploring avenues to contribute on an ongoing basis to education in the region.

Secondly, in the UK we have set up a bursary at Alana's University home, Robinson College, Cambridge. This is specifically for the benefit of female students studying science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) subjects, something that we know Alana would thoroughly have approved of.

Every small donation has and will make a difference; thank you. We will continue to post periodic updates below as things pan out.

A brief update: having completed the Amboaboaka school, Ali and I are now exploring ways in which we can use the remaining funds to support an ongoing development project for education in Madagascar. Watch this space.

(Re. the post below, make sure you keep clicking "Show more" until you've seen all 20 of the Joro photographs. It's not obvious that you need to do that, and there are some great pics in there.)

We're really delighted, and extremely moved, to now share with you the photographs from the Joro (opening ceremony and feast) for the Amboaboaka primary school. We always asked that Alana and you, our fantastic donors, would be commemorated with a plaque, and we think the finished item is just perfect (even if it *was* carved before the project unexpectedly ran on into the subsequent year!). We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Neil Smith and Kelly Brantner for helping us to make this whole project happen. Thank you.
