Story
For the second time in two months, an earthquake has crippled Albania. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-6.4 quake, which struck just before 4 a.m. local time, had an epicenter 30 kilometers (19 miles) northwest of the capital, Tirana, at a depth of 20 kilometers (12 miles). Scores of aftershocks included three with preliminary magnitudes of between 5.1 and 5.4.
The quake collapsed buildings while people were sleeping. While emergency services are working to free people trapped in the rubble, the actual number of those affected or that remain buried in the rubble remains to be confirmed. So far, at least seven people have been confirmed as dead and more than 140 as injured. People are homeless and neighbourhoods have been destroyed.
UK Albanian Professionals (UKAP) is raising funds so we can help affected families with food, water and shelter. Funds will be directed to confirmed local charities where the need is greatest.
UKAP will ensure that funds are solely utilised for those in need any only where we receive the appropriate commitment and transparency, which will be shared with all donors in due time. Please get in touch with us with suggestions and questions through: ukap@ukalbanianprofessionals.org
Whatever you can contribute will make a big difference to the families facing hardship in the immediate hours after the earthquake and in the coming days as they try to rebuild.
Thank you for your generosity and humanity in this time of need.
