What is crowdfunding?

Story
I am volunteering to go to Nepal with Operation Raleigh to help rebuild in the Ghorka region.
After the Nepalese earthquakes in April 2015 nearly 3.5 million people were left homeless. Around $10 billion of damages were incurred by the earthquake, this roughly equates to 50% of their nominal GDP.
The epicentre of the earthquake was in the Ghorka region of Nepal, which is why Operation Raleigh has decided to base their efforts there. Operation Raleigh aims to help improve the situation by constructing housing and infrastructure.
In order to raise money to go and help I am going to take part in the Spartan Race on the 20th of may.
