Story

If you are someone who eats food, cares about the environment and is into thriving local communities and economies - please support this cause! Let's build a fair food and farming system for this country, one which we all benefit from! Thank you :-).

As for me... I'm just a normal person who cares about the food I eat and the environment I live in. A little while ago, I learned more about some of the issues with food production in the UK: the depletion of our soils due to pesticides and fertilisers, the unfairness of a subsidy system which rewards land ownership over food production, and the food insecurity which is inbuilt into our food system. (...Remember the two days of snow this year? And the fact that there were no vegetables on supermarket shelves for at least three days? Whereas I - like many more Bristol households - was fine for veg because I'm a member of a local community-supported agriculture scheme, and their veg only had to travel down the road!)

I joined the Landworkers' Alliance (LWA) as a supporter member in 2017 because I wanted to do more to support the availability of healthy, sustainably produced local food. I also wanted to help ensure fair government policies for the small-scale producers who grow our food, employ people in our local communities, and look after our environment. The LWA works to raise the profile of small producers and family farms, and actively campaigns and lobbies for better government policy for these types of businesses.

Right now, we're in a crucial time for UK food and farming policy: consultation has started on a post-Brexit Agriculture Bill. This is our chance to help shape a fairer, more sustainable, more environmentally sensible farming policy which ensures the availability of fresh, local and affordable food for all of us!

The LWA is working hard to make their voices heard, and we can all support them by raising funds to enable their vital lobbying and outreach work. That's why I've decided to run the Bristol 10k on May 13th in support of the LWA: Two thirds of all funds raised will go towards their national campaign work, while one third will be used on campaigns and events locally, here in the South West. So, get stuck in!

Thank you for your suppport!
