Story

Alfie was born 24/6/14.After a normal pregnancy he was 2 days late, what happened next changed our lives for ever.My waters broke in the early hours of the morning,we called an ambulance.Arriving at the hospital at 5am I made it to the birthing room with a min to spare our boy was born but the room was silent,he wasn't crying as he couldn't breathe. As I lay on the floor the room swarmed with drs he was taken to the resus table where I could see a tube going down his tiny throat, blood coming from his mouth. They left the room with him & returned with a photo. After a few hours they told us there was nothing more they could do as he wasn't responding they were sending him to Yorkhill children's hospital 40 miles away for treatment called ecmo.My husband returned home to care for our 3 boys & I travelled on to Glasgow with alfie in a medical induced coma the ambulance ride was scary they struggled to keep his blood pressure & temp down. For 10 days we held vigil at his incubator watching drugs being administered into his tiny body. Then he started to respond & progress. There was hope.At 3 weeks he was discharged into our care at 6 months he was discharged as an outpatient we were told by his paedatrician that he had made a miraculous recovery & were lucky & I know we are.Group B strep done this to me & caused my son to catch sepsis his body was shutting itself down I still to this day don't know how he made it.But he did.He is now 4 & daily life is a struggle, our boy was diagnosed with autism & has limited communication skills or understanding,he recently fell & was rushed for an op he is a danger to himself, his safety is my top priority. He watches his brothers from the window longing to play with them but it isn't safe it is an actual bomb site out there, even tho we have spent many hours safe guarding it we still lack the materials we need to make our lads life brighter with a sensory garden.Somewhere he can relax & be happy some where his disability does not restrict him.
