    Story

I am running the Bournemouth 10km in aid of Refugee Support, I currently struggle to run a 5km but on the 1st October I aim to run a full 10km! A friend of mine has recently been out to Greece – if you can spare any change please help to support the amazing work that is being done here:

Refugee Support is a grassroots charity working within Greece’s refugee camps. They currently work within two camps, Alexandreia camp, which has 800 residents and Giannitsa camp which has 400 residents. All of Alexandreia camp are Syrian refugees, escaping from civil war and terrorism, whilst Giannitsa has a mixed population including those from Afganistan, Iraq and other war-torn countries. All individuals have had an unimaginable journey to reach the camps, often losing loved ones and beloved possessions in the process.
With the help of donations, Refugee Support has been able to provide the refugees with fresh fruit and vegetables, toiletries, treatment for mosquito bites, baby products and other necessities. They have been able to furnish a clinic space for the medical team, a social space for activities and a small free cafe for residents to use.

Perhaps the most important service they are now providing is a short stay in a hotel for new mothers and their babies, as they only stay in hospital for 2 days post caesarian-section, which is mandatory in Greece for refugees. This provides a safe space for the mother to recover from surgery, and keeps the baby out of the heat. They also provide ‘baby packs’ which includes a safe sleeping space, baby clothes, nappies, and toiletries for the mother.

All produce is bought locally to support the Greek economy. They currently require £1,600 per week to offer the most basic of comforts and food to supplement diets. All volunteers are experienced in refugee and humanitarian work and are fully self-funded. This means that 100% of donations are spent on the intended cause: the refugees.

    Thank you.
