Story
On 11th January 2026 I am competing in the Spine Challenger North - a non-stop ultramarathon spanning 160 miles of the Pennine Way, from Hawes to Kirk Yetholm. Tracker here: https://live.opentracking.co.uk/spinechallnorth26/
I love fell running, but this is 3 times further than I've ever run before. I've trained through the soggy Saddleworth autumn/winter, whilst working as a paediatrician and parenting two kids - it's been a challenge!
I don't really like shouting about my silly pastimes, but it feels like an opportunity to raise awareness and some funds. Over the last few years I have increasingly been interested in population health and the impact of health inequalities. I passionately believe that everyone should have access to beautiful nature, clean air and nourishing food.
To that end I am running in support of:
-The Green Runners - a community of runners "trying to take the (carbon) footprint out of running".
-Mums for Lungs - a fantastic campaigning group I've worked with, who are trying to reduce air pollution for all.
-Oldham Foodbank - a vital resource which many of my patients rely on.
As previous Spine winner, Lucy Gossage, said: "choosing to suffer is a privilege". I feel so lucky to even contemplate starting this challenge. I hope you will join me on the adventure, check out these excellent organisations and consider putting a pound in the virtual pot.
Thanks - and see you on the other side!
Alice :)
