Story
I’m taking part in a charity skydive to help raise money for Myah, a lovely little girl I’ve had the privilege of working with during my physiotherapy placement. 💗
Through my placement, I’ve seen how important ongoing treatment, therapy and specialist equipment can be in supporting children’s development, independence and quality of life. I wanted to do something meaningful to support Myah and help make a positive difference to her and her family.
Understanding Myah’s Condition 💜
Myah has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 2, a rare genetic condition that affects the nerves responsible for controlling muscle movement.
SMA causes muscle weakness because the nerve cells that send signals from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles do not work as they should. This can affect everyday movements, including sitting, standing, walking and using the arms and legs.
How does SMA Type 2 affect Myah?
SMA Type 2 usually begins in infancy or early childhood. It can affect everyone differently, but it commonly causes weakness in the muscles of the arms, legs and body, making movement and everyday activities more challenging.
It can also affect posture, joint movement and the spine. Some people with SMA may experience difficulties with breathing, coughing or swallowing, meaning that ongoing medical care and support can be important.
Although SMA can affect physical movement, it does not usually affect a person’s intelligence or ability to learn. People with SMA can have their own personalities, interests, ambitions and dreams, just like anyone else.
Treatment, support and the future
There is currently no cure for SMA, but treatments are available that can help slow the condition’s progression and improve strength, movement and quality of life. Physiotherapy, specialist care and appropriate equipment can also play an important role in supporting people living with SMA.
Every person’s experience is different, and the support they need depends on how the condition affects them individually.
Why we’re fundraising 💜
We’re taking on a skydive to raise money and awareness for Myah and the challenges that come with living with SMA Type 2.
We want to help make a positive difference and support a cause that means so much to us. Every donation, no matter how big or small, is hugely appreciated and helps us get closer to our fundraising goal.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read Myah’s story, support our challenge and help us raise awareness of SMA. Your kindness and generosity mean a lot to us! 💜
I’m really excited to take on this challenge and raise as much as possible for such a special cause. Every donation, no matter how big or small, would mean so much and help contribute towards Myah’s ongoing needs.
Thank you so much for your support! 💕
