Story
Amazing Alice was set up after Alice Razza passed away, having been battling cancer. After she found out her cancer was terminal, Alice bravely went about writing her bucket list and working her way through it.
I distinctly remembered reading Alice's bucket list. What struck me were the activities that Alice wanted to do that I, about 20 years her senior, thought nothing of doing as part of everyday life. She wanted to do things like spend new year's eve in London and have afternoon tea at Harrods. Clearly, these are special activities. But I, as a 30-something, had been able to enjoy special new year's eves and lovely afternoon teas at fancy hotels already. It had never occurred to me that I might need to put these things on a bucket list, and it broke my heart that Alice wanted to spend the last of her time on earth doing things that I took for granted.
Alice's friends and family started a crowd funding page to help Alice work her way through her bucket list. Since Alice's passing, they have started a charity in Alice's memory to help fund other sick children's bucket lists. Amazing Alice's charity mission is to help other families of children who have been treated on Southampton’s paediatric oncology unit create long lasting memories. Their mission is to provide special times for families doing the things their children enjoy doing. Alice also wanted to give back to the nurses that helped her during her illness, and a part of the charity is to support extra training not funded by the NHS to help non-medical teams at Winchester and Basingstoke paediatric departments help children with complex and life limiting conditions.
When I found out I'd been lucky enough to win a London Marathon place in the ballot, I knew I wanted to run for Amazing Alice. The London Marathon is on so many bucket lists, it just made sense.
