Story

Family Spirit Orphanage is run by Isaac and Susan, both HIV positive. They look after about 200 children. This also includes children who live in the nearby village but attend the orphanage's school.

The entrepreneurial spirit of Family Spirit means that a few years on and with the help of our friends Mike and Veronika Reeves and the help of other fundraisers, the orphanage own a few acres of land, grow their own fruit and vegetables and more recently pigs, goats, chickens and a couple of cows. The children now get meat once a week and any surplus can be sold for profit.

Any profit from Isaac and Susan's ventures goes back to the orphanage and the children. While the boys and the girls have each their own beds in separate dormitories, 'the parents' are still living in a small dark room in one of the old buildings with their two boys, sharing a double bed.

There is a high prevalence of HIV in Masindi area (recently 8%) and is bound to grow due to some oil being found in the nearby Murchison National park (the sex workers travel where there's employment for men).

There are currently about 35 children in the orphanage who are HIV positive, all receiving medication regularly.

It is now our turn to do something, so myself and son Harry are looking to go out to the orphanage in October 2019. My mission is to deliver sports coaching and teacher training in PE to the teachers at the local schools and orphanage (or to any one who wants it). I will also be delivering trauma and first aid training to selected people within the area to assist and support the total lack of local medical help.

In addition myself and Harry will be looking to entertain and help as many of the orphans as possible, running sports competitions on a daily basis.

I (Harry) am going to assist in teaching basic English and Maths at the orphanage's school using the information I have learnt from my GCSE's and in addition I will also be help my Dad with the sport competitions at the orphanage.

We will be holding various events to raise money throughout the year. Please get in touch if you'd like to get involved.

Race Night - Saturday 9th March 2019

Golf Day - Saturday 28th April 2019

All the money we raise will go towards buying first aid equipment, sanitary wear, sports equipment, teaching supplies, clothing. In addition if we raise enough money we aim to set up local sports scholarships to enable some of the orphanage's children to attend secondary school and university.
