I have been very fortunate to be accepted to volunteer on a Mental Health Placement later this year. I will be involved in engaging with the local community in Bali, Indonesia as well as enhancing my experience and knowledge of mental health. I am pleased that this will all be undertaken with a company that is focused on being ethical and sustainable; a factor that is hugely important to me.

This placement focuses on providing volunteers to help in the mental health field on a global scale, and in countries where resources are scarce. Unfortunately, Bali is under resourced in mental health and coupled with a distinct lack of understanding, makes for seeking and obtaining the necessary treatment extremely difficult for those in need.

60% of my time on placement will be spent planning and delivering therapeutic services; this includes working at a psychiatric facility for people suffering from a range of mental health conditions (the only facility of its kind on the whole island!), and at rehabilitation centres for those suffering from autism or brain injury.

The other 40% will be spent teaching English for development in schools or vocational training institutes. This will provide them with better career prospects as English is a real commodity in Indonesia, with tourism being Bali's main enterprise. Community outreach is another part of the placement and volunteers will be available and willing to provide/assist/cater to what is needed or requested from the community members.

I hope I am able to empower individuals and be able to encourage expression, development and recovery. This experience will force me to face new daily challenges, work with people of differing ages and abilities, with the right ethics and high quality of care.

As humans, the more we give, the happier we feel. The alleviation of suffering to others brings reward and can counteract the effect of stress and anxiety. I aspire to return with a richer quality of experience, mastering the skill of thinking outside the box, working and living outside my comfort zone and most importantly, a lifetime of memories.
