Story
Alys is nearly five years old and has Cerebral Palsy caused by a condition known as periventricular leukomalacia. This affects the white matter of the brain which is responsible for transmitting messages from the nerve cells in the brain to the various parts of the body. In Alys' case this affects her ability to control and use her legs (diplegia) and to a lesser extent it affects her left arm. Because of ths Alys cannot walk, stand, crawl or do many of the other things one might expect a child of her age to do. Alys currently moves herself around by rolling on the floor. She is a happy little girl who takes everything in her stride and is a bright little girl despite everything. Alys' condition generally responds well to physiotherapy and other similar interventions but unfortunately this has been lacking due apparently to funding and staff cuts in the local childrens services. It has in fact been a year since the physiotherapist responsible for Alys has visited her at home and several months since they last visited Alys at school. Even before then the visits were at best sporadic and lacking any overall approach to her needs. As a consequence Alys has failed to make the progress that might have been expected and as each day passes it will get harder and harder to get Alys on her feet. We ourselves have funded private physiotherapy in the past as we had become frustrated by the failure to provide Alys with the help she so desperately needs. Unfortunately privately funded physiotherapy sessions for children with Alys' condition are not cheap and we are no longer financially in a position to keep funding them on our own. What is at stake here is a little girls ability to perhaps one day walk and lead an independent life, a future that is being jeopardised through no fault of her own. We are desperate to provide Alys with everything necessary to give her the best chance of achieving what most of us take for granted and this is why we have finally decided that we cannot do this on our own anymore and have created this fundraising page and trust in the generosity of others to help us get Alys on her feet. We have a brilliant physiotherapist who is prepared to take Alys on and who has worked with her before and any funds raised will be used to provide Alys with the physiotherapy she so desperately needs. Thank you for taking the time to read Alys' story and if you can contribute in any way you will be helping to provide Alys with a better, brighter, and hopefully independent future.
