Story
Everyone has heard of Robin Williams, but not many people have heard of Lewy Body Disease – the little known but deadly disease that he suffered from. Unfortunately we have – our lovely mum/gran was finally diagnosed with this in April 2015 after almost 2 years of scans and tests. By this time her Parkinsons symptoms were present and this helped the consultant make the diagnosis. Mum is not unique, this disease is more common than people realise but is very often mis-diagnosed.
Like most brain diseases and dementia there is no cure – our mum/gran is now unable to walk and she has advanced dementia. It has been heart-breaking watching this active, caring person whom we love dearly become a shell. Robin’s widow wrote an article recently and called it ‘The Terrorist inside my husband’s brain’ – this is a perfect description.
The Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Research Centre is in partnership with Edinburgh University http://www.alzscotdrc.ed.ac.uk/ The facility provides a high-quality research environment for investigations into the causes and treatment of dementia, and care provided by relatives and friends
We would like to raise money to help fund this research with the hope that one day a cure will be found and spare other families going through the pain and heart-ache we are, though even more importantly spare another person suffering and struggling like our mum/gran is.
Our first event is the Supernova 5km run/walk at the Kelpies on Saturday 12th November. We will all be taking part and would appreciate any donations.
Thank you!
Thank you
Ian, Ryan, Grant, Elaine, Lorraine, Nikki and Amy
Ryan will also be running 15 miles of trails in the dark on the 29th October as part of the Illuminator Half Marathon in the Glen Tanar forrest. Any donations raised for this will also be donated to Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Research Centre.
