I have been asked to raise the target as people still want to give and the cost will probably be over £10,000. Any excess funds will by used in line with the up keep and maintenance etc.
Royal Air Force Bomb Disposal Memorial
We want to build a memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum to ensure that the great work and selfless dedication of the Royal Air Force Bomb Disposal personnel will forever be remembered.
Our aim is to raise sufficient money to have a Memorial to Royal Air Force Bomb Disposal installed at the National Memorial Arboretum. The target amount is £10,000.
This amount will cover the application process, the design, manufacture and installation of the memorial and the through life maintenance.
In 1939, at Sullom Voe in the Shetland Islands, the first unexploded bomb of the Second World War was dealt with by the Royal Air Force. The brave armourers involved in the task were paving the way for what would become the Royal Air Force Bomb Disposal capability.
Royal Air Force Bomb Disposal played a huge part in World War II and continued to do so in operations all over the world, as well as providing 24/7 cover at home providing Military Aid to the Civil Administration, through to 2020. During that time several people lost their lives in the line of duty and numerous medals and honours were awarded.
In recent times they have played key roles in the Falkland Island, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan
The Royal Air Force capability was disbanded in 2020 and all responsibility for Bomb Disposal was passed to the Royal Navy and the Army.
