Story

My name is Dan Slack. I have been crazy about plants all my life. I grew the largest sunflower in my home town of Nantwich aged 5, and the first tv gardener, Percy Thrower, gave me my prize. I never stopped growing things since.
I have studied at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and worked on plant projects in Mauritius, South Africa and Brazil amongst.
So after visiting the site of a huge hydro electric dam project in The Amazon Rainforest I felt compelled to do something to protect this amazing place. The cover photo is cleared forest in what is now a drowned forest - the reservoir to the dam. The reservoir is larger than Greater London!
In short I want to replant small sections of forest. Hopefully this will catch on and we can replant larger and larger areas.
I have talked to two schools in Brazil and they are happy for me to set up plant nurseries on their land.
Why do this? For me the area is so incredible it should be left untouched and that is reason enough, but other reasons are,
1. a large percentage of our medicines come from plants. One day a plant from The Amazon may just save your life. more than 60% of cancer medicines come from plants. This forest has more plants than anywhere else on earth.
2. The forest is home to fabulous indigenous communities. I met some of these people and one had never heard of London or even Belem, the main city in northern Brazil. We should not destroy their 'home' plain and simple.
3.Wildlife. Incredible wildlife exists in these forests from bizarre monkeys, to enormous snakes, sci fi like beetles, and beautiful birds.

You can view info re the Belo Monte Dam at the facebook page I set up. NO Amazon DAM.
