I've raised £2200 to launch a Zero Waste, Packaging Free, Affordable, Healthy Snacks Kiosk using our surplus produce from this year's berry season.

One Church Brighton works with people from across Sussex who live on the margins of society, regardless of age, background or beliefs. We serve groups including the homeless and vulnerably housed, low-income families, unemployed people, disenfranchised youth and seniors at risk of isolation. We are building an innovative sustainable food project, Rock Farm, to help people move beyond chronic isolation and unemployment into durable community work via nature-based wellness. We offer access to horticultural therapy whilst growing food for local markets, using innovative permaculture strategies, linking with other brilliant local food projects like Old Tree Brewery , Fin & Farm and Hisbe Supermarket . All whilst taking care to regenerate used farmland whilst extending access to land and healthy eating to just about anybody.
We are emerging from the very short-lived berry season, and as sad as it is to see it come to an end, the 2018 heatwave has left us with a surplus of redcurrants and blackcurrants - this years bounty. As we are a sustainable food growing project, we plan to not waste one single berry whilst tackling some ethical issues along the way.
Your generosity will help launch a zero waste, packaging free, affordable, healthy snacks project using Rock Farm surplus at Florence Road Market. Every single surplus berry will go into various vegan and non-vegan, refined sugar free snack to be sold at a very not-posh price point. You will help support set-up costs, recipe development, testing, display materials and clever signage as well as all the time spent picking, freezing and processing the remaining fruit. Expect a selection of creative delights (bars, jams, compotes, tarts, muffins) whilst embedding the project within the market’s “no waste” transformation and potentially extending to other outlets. This will be the first year that we make use of ALL the fruit from Rock Farm, and we hope this leads to bigger things!

At One Church/Rock Farm, we are in a unique position to understand the demand for sustainable food and nature-based therapy due to our existing relationships and current projects. Our produce comes from a cohort of people who are connecting to nature and recovering from difficulties whilst also proving that energy efficient, ecosystem-conscious farming is a legitimate and productive approach for the future. We want to broaden this connection and raise even further awareness of how important it is for a market-based farm model to produce food in a sustainable manner whilst simultaneously eliminating waste. This project would allow us to build our story, tackle new ethical issues around food production and generate new connections for urban people into the origins and energy behind their food.
