I recently decided to join the "Think Pacific" volunteer organisation on a trip to Fiji. It has become apparent to me that helping others through humanitarian projects can make a huge difference, no matter how many or few people you support. Through this project, I aim to give my time and efforts, which will go towards improving local resources in the Fijian communities and help to supply hands-on assistance with their children's education. Poverty in Fiji often goes unnoticed. Over 250,000 people live in poverty there and, due to the islands being widely dispersed, it is very difficult to provide effective support to these people. Inefficient health care and education are just some of the issues caused by poverty. As a student myself, I know how important it is for children to receive an education no matter where they come from. In this case, it is within the remote locations of the Fijian Islands. It always seems such a shame when you hear children from privileged backgrounds complaining about going to school when in reality, it is the most important opportunity they have to ensure a bright future for themselves. With this chance to provide my own hands-on assistance for the underprivileged, I hope to contribute to the lives of as many local people as possible and allow them to progress and grow throughout my time in Fiji and beyond.
