#Amelia-kicks-her-curves

**Including offline donations total so far is £63675**. Thank you everyone and please keep supporting Amelia.

Amelia is our amazing 15 year old daughter who has severe idiopathic scoliosis – an abnormal curvature of the spine. We need to raise funds urgently to enable her to have innovative spinal surgery called Vertebral Body Tethering (currently not available on the NHS) to preserve her lungs and breathing, as well as her growth, flexibility and ensure she has quality of life and a pain-free future. The treatment needs to be carried out before the end of the year and so time is against us. Please help us get the life changing surgery Amelia needs. We would be so appreciative of any donations, however small.

All monies raised will be put towards the cost of Amelia’s surgery and related care.

Carl, Lisa & Amelia

If you have the time read Amelia's story..... Find out more about scoliosis, VBT and our petition to campaign to try and make it available on the NHS.

Diagnosed in November 2018, Amelia rapidly developed many of the symptoms associated with her condition:- one shoulder blade higher than the other, rib cage prominence, uneven hips, rotating spine, reduced area in the chest for the lungs to expand and chronic pain.

Amelia’s scoliosis consists of 2 curves, making her spine S-shaped. The curves have a considerable amount of rotation and continue to show signs of progression. She is monitored on a regular basis, however, at her recent review the consultant confirmed that surgery is now necessary due to the progressive nature of her condition and the amount of growth she still has left. Her curves are already at 60 & 70 degrees respectively.

We are tremendously proud of the remarkable determination she has shown in managing her condition, completing daily exercises & stretches to maintain as much flexibility as possible. Massage helps to ease pain triggers & taping corrects her posture…. all driven by her commitment to be match fit at all times to play football which is her passion - she has been playing since she was 4 years old and simply adores it!

We have reached the stage where doing nothing is simply not an option – her condition is progressing at pace and if left untreated can ultimately affect her internal organs, particularly her lungs and breathing; it will result in further deterioration of her condition and of course on-going chronic pain.

Currently the NHS treatment is a major operation known as spinal fusion. It involves titanium rods and screws being inserted into the spine, fusing vertebrae and thereby straightening the spine. As fusion takes place over time, this would eventually make her spine a solid structure of bone. Sadly, it will also limit any further growth and more importantly, it will limit the flexibility and movement of her spine.

For an active young lady and passionate footballer this is obviously not the outcome you want to hear!

The good news is Amelia can have an operation called Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT). This is innovative and ground breaking surgery that involves inserting titanium screws into the vertebrae; using a flexible cord (tether) and tension to align the spine into a straighter position. This allows for further growth and the all-important flexibility to be maintained…..quite simply this will be life changing - giving Amelia the best possible chance of maintaining an active lifestyle, achieving her football ambitions; positively changing her physical appearance and promises a future that is pain-free.

Unfortunately, at present VBT is not offered by the NHS and whilst it may be sometime in the future, we simply do not have the luxury of time in waiting for this to change as the procedure needs to take place whilst Amelia is still growing.

This means we need to arrange for Amelia to have the surgery privately and raise the funds to pay for it. Amelia needs both of her curves tethered so you can imagine the operation comes with a big price tag!

Appealing for help in this way is not an easy thing for us to do but we now have limited time to raise the funds and we hope with some help we can achieve this for Amelia.

As her parents we only want what we believe is the best option for our daughter –she deserves the opportunity to live a full and pain free life. VBT offers her this and we would therefore be hugely appreciative of any donations, however small; offers to arrange or support with fundraising events or donations of prizes to raffle or auction. Any small act of kindness will make a huge and positive difference.

Please also help us by sharing this information with as many people as you can –family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances and the football community; getting the message out and raising awareness about scoliosis. We have set up a petition to lobby for VBT surgery to be available on the NHS. Please visit the link Parliament VBT Petition and sign up to support and share.

Help to support our campaign #Amelia-kicks-her-curves and contribute to making a huge and positive difference to Amelia’s future and quality of life.....help us to keep her playing football!

Thank you again for your support.
