Elective Placement - April 2019

The Salvation Army's Chikankata Mission was established in 1946, and provides a rural hospital, school and church in Zambia, Central Africa, to serve the needs of the entire community.

As part of my Nursing degree, in April 2019 I am fortunate enough to undertake a 4 week elective placement anywhere in the world. As an active member of the Salvation Army, I jumped at the opportunity to experience healthcare at their mission hospital in Chikankata, Zambia. This trip will provide me with exposure to a diverse range of tropical health and medical issues, alongside broadening my knowledge and understanding of healthcare, and the differing cultural ways in which healthcare is practiced.

The hospital is made up of 8 wards that provide nursing care, and throughout my 4 weeks, I will be volunteering as a student nurse in many of these areas while under the guidance and supervision of the medical team.

The trip will cost around £2000 in total, and the £500 I hope to raise here will be used to cover the cost of transport required to get me from Zambia's Capital Lusaka to the remote area of Chikankata, and also the cost of my accommodation, which will be self-catered, student accommodation within the Chikankata Mission.

Any donations made will be gratefully received and will really help me on my journey to Zambia!
