Story

Andrea suffered a significant family bereavement in August which has triggered her longstanding mental health problems. Andrea tried to get help almost immediately knowing that left alone this would spiral out of control. After repeatedly being turned away by 3 GP's, the first said Andrea had too many problems to help her scribbling a MH helpline no. on a post it note. Second had too little experience of MH and referred her to MH services and finally the third. He asked Andrea when would she understand she is not important enough to be seen by MH services yet but Andrea should know its all in her head so not that bad and put a smile on her face. Prescribed Diazepam and told her to take a hot bath. Self referred counselling, mental health nurses, single point of access, the crisis team all said no. Finally desperate A&E. After 10 hours they listened for 15 mins and told Andrea as she hadnt tried to kill herself, they couldnt help. NOTHING. Only a leaflet for a MH helpline. Andrea is suffering. She cannot leave the house. Cannot sleep without nightmares. Cannot eat properly losing large amounts of weight. So distressed. Paranoia, sared for her life. We've been told real risk of spiralling into psychosis if not treated soon. Urgent is February but that will be too late. Private locally is 2 weeks with no help/support. Andrea campaigns constantly and is a champion for a well know MH charity, speaks on local and national radio and even has her own website itsokaytotalkblog.com. Now Andrea's life is at risk, the NHS has repeatedly failed her and we now have no choice but to pay for care 2 hours away from our home at £350 a session. If we can raise enough for 2 sessions its a start. I dont want to lose my child and theres a very high risk of this happening. I don't know what else to do. Suicide should not be the benchmark for help.
