Story
We are proud to present a powerful partnership between Tinker & Budget, Admiral Taverns, and the Oswaldtwistle community to create a landmark war mural on the gable end of the Tinker & Budget pub.
This project is about far more than paint on brick. It is about pride of place. It is about remembrance. And it is about identity.
The Tinker & Budget sits just a short distance from the town’s war cenotaph — a place where, every Remembrance Sunday, the community gathers in force to pay homage to those who have fallen and those who continue to serve. This mural will stand as a permanent visual tribute alongside that tradition, strengthening the connection between the pub, the cenotaph, and the heart of the town.
The mural will be designed and delivered by The Butterfly Effected, a collective known for creating meaningful, community-led public art. Their approach ensures this will not simply be an artwork placed onto the town — it will be an artwork created with the town.
The process will begin with a series of community workshops, inviting residents, local historians, veterans, young people, schools, and community groups to share stories, memories, and ideas. These sessions will gather inspiration rooted in Oswaldtwistle’s identity — its past and present generations, its resilience, and its proud heritage as a mill town during the Industrial Revolution.
From those workshops, a number of final design concepts will be developed. These concepts will then be presented at a public community consultation event, where residents will have the opportunity to view the designs and vote on the final artwork. This ensures the finished mural truly reflects the voice of the town.
The artwork itself will weave together multiple strands of Oswaldtwistle’s fabric — honouring military service and sacrifice, celebrating the town’s industrial past as a Lancashire mill community, and recognising the strength and unity of present-day generations. It will tell a story that connects history with the future.
Once completed, the mural will be professionally sealed with anti-vandal protective coating to ensure its longevity. This investment protects the artwork for years to come, preserving it as a lasting symbol of remembrance and civic pride.
This is a £20,000 community-driven project. Community groups, residents, veterans’ organisations, local businesses, and supporters are coming together under many different fundraising initiatives to make it happen. From events to sponsorship, donations to partnerships, this mural will stand as proof of what can be achieved when a town unites behind a shared vision.
This partnership between the Tinker & Budget, Admiral Taverns, The Butterfly Effected, and the people of Oswaldtwistle represents more than collaboration — it represents community ownership.
A mural that honours sacrifice.
A mural that celebrates heritage.
A mural chosen by the people.
And a mural that will stand proudly for generations to come.
