*****UPDATE - Dear all, due to a couple of medical issues this new year 2020 I will now be undertaking the 3 month stint in October 2020. All donations to date will be taken over to assist on the ground and are safely stored in the just giving website, less purchases of items below which will go with me. Disappointed to postpone but time will fly i am sure *****
Hi supporters and thanks for clicking through to my page. I will be heading off to Ethiopia to Addis Abbaba in Feb 2020 as part of a planned career break to teach English and Maths and general life skills to students aged 12-18. I am funding myself for the project for accomodation and my own expenses. The aim is to educate the students to make a difference to the future of the country and enable them to start businesses or go into the professions locally. I am working with a registered UK charity for this placement. You can check out their charity registration and details here : http://www.ethio-ed.org
The students are from very disadvantaged backgrounds - please have a look at the website to see some of their stories - but all are keen and eager to learn and do well. I cant wait to get started on the ground there.
The focus of my crowdfunding is to provide some materials locally to help my students and any money I raise will be spent solely on the following and not towards any expenses for me :
- Pens, pencils, paper and associated resources for the classroom
- Books, leaflets on health and well-being which is a key part of the course (I am hoping to tap into my lovely NHS friends to cover this part for free!)
- English dictionaries and text books
- Football and PE kit for recreation time - I have tapped into my favourite club Leicester City FC who will provide a discount for this. The foxes will take over Ethiopia!!
- If i raise enough i would like to buy the school a laptop or Ipad locally
On the advice of the school i will buy most of these items locally to put money into the local economy (apart from the English books and the LCFC kits which i will buy here in the UK) I promise wifi permitting i will post all items on Instagram and on here for you all to see.
The project is also in need of second hand clothes for any ages and i have a 24kg allowance for that as an extra suitcase. So if any of my supporters have any unwanted clothes please do let me know. I can pick up if you are local.
Thanks for supporting me
Lots of love - Andy
