Story
We are looking to raise £15,000 to support mental health and suicide prevention work with students and to raise general awareness regarding the routes that they can take to get help when they need it most.
Having worked with Student athletes for a number of years it was eye opening to hear about the number of students who either had thought of suicide or had actually attempted and in some cases succeeded to take their own life. What we also found to be frightening is how well they had hidden what they were going through and that they felt that they were alone in their struggle despite them potentially having a strong support network around them.
We are pushing to help raise as much as possible to support and develop mental health support organisations and services for young people and Students and to give them the help that they need at a time when they obviously are feeling the most isolated and vulnerable. In order to help facilitate this we are looking to work with the likes of LooseHeadz and Mind to provide support to coaches within the University environment so that they are better equipped to be able to help people in crisis. We have found that often athletes will be more willing to speak with and confide in their coach and that this relationship can be crucial in helping them. This support along with being able to link up with the correct support networks within the organisations we will work with should help to ensure that fewer young people have to suffer on their own and hopefully we can make a positive impact when they need it most.
All donations are greatly appreciated and will help to make it easier for young people and students to find the help that they need.
