Story
I sometimes feel helpless about the devastating scenes of war in Syria and the desperate plight of the Syrian people as they are forced from their homes. Every small act can bring about direct and positive change. Many small acts may create a powerful movement.
The Heart School is a small, focused project that is making a huge difference to children who have spent years living in camps, missing out on both childhood and education.
I love the aims of the Heart School project - to provide a safe, fun learning space. This gives me hope. I want to swim, bike, run to help raise awareness and funds for this vital and inspiring project. Please give generously.
In the words of Heart ELT's founder Julie Kacmaz:
"Thousands of Syrian children are living in refugee camps dotted around the borders of Turkey and Iraq... Although many governments have set up camps and international aid organisations like WHO and MSF are providing food, healthcare and clothing, children need a place where they can engage in play and learning. Children are the real victims of this war and we need to ease their suffering and give them an opportunity to learn.
The first safe learning space is in place and a local teacher called Jiyan, who is also a refugee, is giving the children in the camp lessons. At the moment the lessons are informal sessions, singing, dancing and craft activities. These kids have been through a lot and need a space where they can meet, learn and have fun.
The Heart School's 'home' is a small mobile unit that we were given permission to use as a classroom. From the beginning of May we need to apply to the Ministry of Education for a license to operate as an international organisation within the camp. We also need to purchase our own mobile unit (cost: £1,500) and equip it with furniture and a whiteboard. Once we have set up this space, we will be looking look at possibilities of sending a local teacher trainer to support and help the volunteer teachers."

8 years agoThank you to everyone who has donated so generously so far. I have set up a new page here https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/andrew-sharp-triathlon-Syria-refugees Please do share it with anyone you think might be interested in further support. I completed the second event - DamBuster Triathlon - yesterday. It was quite cold and windy which made the bike leg a little challenging. The water temperature was higher than the air temperature so getting into a cold lake was actually quite inviting. Many thanks again! Andrew

I'll be tackling 3 triathlons to raise money for the Heart School for children in refugee camps whose lives have been marred by the war in Syria. They need hope and deserve an education. 187,150 metres of triathlon: 4,150m swim, 147,000m cycle, 36,000m run to raise £1,871.50.
