Weʼve raised £1,000 to purchase and install a memorial plaque to remember Andrew Bennett.

Funded on Friday, 31st August 2018

    Story

Andrew was a lifelong Cambridge United supporter who gained an army of admirers in the late 1990s through his witty and irreverent match reports which would never fail to raise a smile no matter how United had played on that particular day.

Over many years Andrew also started to compile statistics and historical information on the club which he eventually put to good use when he started writing his history of the football club. To date he has had two volumes of "Celery & Coconuts" published to great acclaim and although Andrew's illness curtailed many things he managed to finish the remaining volumes which will be released over time.

Andrew sadly lost his battle with oesophageal cancer earlier this year but the memory of the man who was given the title of Honorary Historian by Cambridge United still remains.

100 Years of Coconuts are therefore looking to purchase and install an official memorial plaque to remember someone who was not just a fellow committee member but a great friend.

A plaque will cost in the region of £500 and whilst a donation will be provided by the group our funding is extremely limited. We have therefore decided to ask for donations from the wider community so that we can provide a long lasting memorial to be installed in the Habbin Stand where he stood which can also be transferred to any future development.

    Thank you,

    Ian

I just wanted to say a final huge thank you to everyone who donated towards the plaque to remember Andrew (see picture below). Last Saturday (24/11) we officially unveiled the plaque which has been installed on the wall of the entrance tunnel to the Habbin and this was attended by both members of Andrew's family and close friends. The surplus money raised will go towards another Andrew related project and this will be announced in due course. Thanks again, Ian

I would like to send a huge personal thank you to everyone who so kindly donated towards the plaque which has now been ordered. We obviously have more money than was originally required so we have decided to put any extra funds towards a further scheme to remember Andrew which will be announced in due course. Thank you all again for your amazing generosity Ian

Strangely I never actually met Andrew but I was an avid reader of his match reports and have purchased all his books. A true United legend who will be sorely missed.
