Story
Imagine having your own business and being lucky enough to do something that you love as a job. Imagine being good enough at it that you can do it full-time… Imagine waking up one morning to discover that it's all gone up in flames.
This happened to a dear friend of ours, on 21 December: an electrical fire broke out in the roof space of his workshop, gutting it... The worst nightmare that could possibly befall a skilled craftsman and small business owner like Andy - especially in the run-up to Christmas.
Anyone who has run their own business knows the amount of dedication and money that goes into establishing such an endeavour, and when that work constitutes setting up a workshop, developing a career as an artisan and artist, buying specialist tools and machinery - especially the kind that Andy has in his professional woodturner's workshop - the cost and effort involved is significant.
Our initial funding goal was set at £5k - set by Siobhan early on Wednesday. Since then we have all realised that the damage is more severe than we thought and that Andy will likely have to replace in excess of £15k worth of equipment, including but not limited to:
- pedestal drill
- table saw
- filter hood/mask
- two bandsaws
- one of the (eyewateringly expensive) lathes which may be repairable with parts from Canada, but we have no guarantee that the fire damage won't be terminal even with those parts...
- Hand tools and other equipment
All this is unlikely to be covered by £5k so are now hoping to raise closer to £15k (and hopefully more) to help Andy get his workshop, his business, and his source of income back on track. The damage will continue to be assessed over the coming days and we will keep you updated.
Heartbreakingly, our funding goal doesn’t take into account the fact that Andy will have nowhere to work in the New Year.

8 years agoAndy, Helen, & myself have taken the decision to close the Just Giving page on Friday 20 Jan, to allow Andy to start replacing tools/equipment & get working, asap. We'd like to thank everyone who donated or supported Andy with kind words & gestures, in the last few weeks. Words cannot express quite how much we appreciate your generosity & help, especially over Christmas. I know Andy was lost for words on more than one occasion! So, thank you. And please keep in touch! 8 years agoThe first item in the #andysfireauction is now live and available to bid on (starting bid £50). If you are interested in the next phase of our fundraising efforts, keep an eye on the auction site http://www.thewoodengallery.co.uk, and follow @woodengalleryuk on Twitter for updates on new items. Andy has also found a new place to work for the next few months. It's not quite as nice as his old place (before the fire, obviously!) but it means he can start sourcing new tools and equipment using the funds you have all so generously donated.

8 years agoWe'd like to thank all of you who have donated or wished Andy well with getting back on his feet. It's been a particularly tough Christmas, as you can probably imagine, but he is making good headway with the workshop clearance. We wanted to also remind any of you that have kindly offered tools or help with services (electricians, tilers, etc) to please let us know via this form: https://goo.gl/forms/jQsFJ3hf2YzSc6SB3 Unfortunately, Just Giving don't allow us access to donor email addresses but we'd obviously like to keep in touch with you!

I work as an administrator in Higher Education. I am interested in makers, doers, and creative thinkers. I lost a large proportion of my possessions in a fire in my early 20s, and was amazed at the power of the community, and the support I received. Want to pass that on...
